I Tried DNAFit At Home Blood Test and DNA Test, Here’s Why I Think You Should Too

I am a big believer that information and data can help to optimise your life. Many people are spending a lot of time and money on “health and wellness” fixes without actually knowing how these fixes are affecting them in the inside, or if they are wasting their time embarking on a new training regime. I tried two DNAFit's tests, find out how I did!

I Tried DNAFit At Home Blood Test and DNA Test, Here’s Why I Think You Should Too

So I tried two of DNAFit’s products – SnapShot and Diet Fitness Pro 360.

SnapShot is an at home blood test, which tells you what is currently going on inside your body across five key markers.

Diet Fitness Pro 360 is an at home DNA test, which assesses your genetic profile and can advise on your optimal training and recovery type as well as potential nutritional sensitivities and advises on the optimal type of diet for you.

I have been meaning to start getting my blood tested on a regular basis for a long time now and thankfully the guys at DNAFit decided to get in touch.

This is a sponsored blog post, but as you guys know I am very careful about who I work with and I virtually never say yes to sponsored posts/articles/videos.

However, I really believe in what DNAFit are doing and the service they are offering, so I decided to accept their proposal and create some content about my experience and results.

So why do I think you should try it?

I am a big believer that tracking information and data can help to optimise your life. Many people are spending a lot of time and money on “health and wellness” fixes, without actually knowing how these fixes are affecting them on the inside, or if they are wasting their time embarking on a new training regime.

The technology is now there for you to accurately track how various life style factors like sleep, diet and exercise are affecting your body – no more wasting time through trial and error!

Snapshot is an at home blood testing kit that examines your blood across five key markers – lipids, vitamins, liver function, inflammation and iron.

The at-home kit enables you to fill a small vial with blood via a pin prick, and once you’ve sent it back, you’ll wait just two – three days for the results. As well as the numbers, you’ll receive a series of helpful notes from a doctor to explain them.

Inside the Snapshot box you’ll find everything you need to take a blood sample from the comfort of your home. That includes a test tube, blood lancets to break the skin, alcohol wipes and plasters for your fingertips. Immerse your hand in warm water for two minutes, and then stab a digit or two, letting the resulting blood drip into the vial.

Check out the video I made that guides you through the process, it’s incredibly quick and simple!

My Results

The results were really interesting to see and you get a tonne of detailed information as well as a note from a doctor who explains some of your results.

This is just a small selection of information that is in my members section on the DNAFit website.

I plan on using snapshot once a quarter to see how my levels change through the seasons and how my diet in particular is affecting me.

The only thing I need to work on is my LDL and Total Cholesterol levels, which are heavily influenced by diet. In the lead up to taking this test my diet definitely wasn’t in check like it usually is – it was the Christmas period!

As an example of how you can use these results to see if you are wasting time and money on supplementation – I was very pleased that my Vitamin D were very much in the green, I supplement with Vitamin D3 throughout the winter months so it’s a clear indication I am not wasting my money.

Diet Fitness Pro 360

This at home genetic test uses a check swab to tell you about your genetic response to carbohydrates, saturated fats, lactose, alcohol, and caffeine. You’ll also learn what your genetics suggest about your intake of antioxidants, omega-3 fats, vitamin B, and vitamin D.

You also get to speak to a trained dietician or fitness coach to optimise your diet and training program, based on your DNA.

My Results

I got my results back in about five days, there is A LOT of information in the back end about what all the results mean, but they lay it out for you in a handy PDF, here is mine:

It was interesting to see my training type, I am built for power and speed, not endurance. I have a medium VO2 Max response, I recover quickly and I get injured easily.

I have worked all of this out for myself after years and years of consistent training, however if you are just about to start a new fitness regime and you have no previous experience, this could be a really good way to optimise your training! If I had known all this when I was much younger it could have made all the difference.

Additionally, it has advised that my optimal diet is low carb. This doesn’t come as a surprise to me because I have spent most of my adult life eating a low carb diet, because it works for me. However, it may not work for you. So although it is very popular and it has aided many people in optimising health, it may have the opposite effect for you!

How You Can Use These Tests Together

You can use these two tests together to pinpoint exactly what is working for you, or what isn’t working. Here are some examples:

Diet Fitness Pro 360 has informed me of my underlying genetic predispositions.

I have a high need for Omega 3s which means that I may me more predisposed to inflammation in the body. As you can see in the results below my inflammation levels are incredibly low. This means that the lifestyle factors that I incorporate into my life are working against my genetic predisposition. I supplement consistently with Bare Biology’s high quality omega 3s, eat a balance diet, practice cold water therapy, exercise regularly and practice intermittent fasting. All these things can reduce inflammation in the body.

I also have a higher than average need for Vitamin D. Last winter I started supplementing with Vitamin D3 regularly and felt an immediate difference, I had more energy and didn’t get ill in winter. As you can see from the SnapShot results, my Vitamin D levels were in the green, even though it is the middle of winter.

Get One For Yourself!

You guys should know by now that I am fascinated by every aspect of health and fitness. Not just the shallow aesthetic things people usually focus on.

Using these tests could dramatically improve the efficiency of your training and your diet, and whether you really are wasting your time and money on certain supplementation.

I will continue to use SnapShot on a quarterly basis because I believe that prevention is the best form of medicine. Why wait until you have something seriously wrong with you when you can catch a potential problem in its tracks before it becomes an issue.

The epidemic we have here in the Western world with Type 2 Diabeties, heart disease and obesity doesn’t happen over night, it happens gradually over time – these tests can help you make the right choices in life and potentially stop these conditions in their tracks.
